Flatliner Rod Shop Project:

Hatz Bantam Biplane (project on hold for different airplane project)
The Hatz Bantam biplane is the latest variation on a very successful design that has been flying for decades.  Designed with a gross weight of 1320 lbs, the Bantam is the lightest version.  The design, while updated for more modern materials, is very similar in layout to the time-proven Hatz CB-1 and the elegant Hatz Classic.

Our Hatz Bantam project is detailed here, mostly for the fun of it.

The first two photos below are an example of a Hatz Classic, known as the Vintage Hatz.  This particular example is already becoming well-known in the Hatz world, as the craftsmanship sets an example for builders of all types of vintage aircraft.  I'd like to thank Hans and Sam for allowing us to use their photos.  More details on their project can be found at:   The Aeroplane Works Homebase.

WARNING:  Do not use the photos and info below to try and build an airplane.  An airplane is designed with specific thicknesses and grades of metal for different purposes.  The ONLY way to successfully build an airplane is to build from plans purchased from reputable dealers or have a qualified engineer design one (even then, you'd be venturing into unknown territory...).

The photos to follow will be a basic run-down of Flatliner's Hatz Bantam project.  New photos will be added as the project moves forward.  Be warned, though:  building an airplane is not something that happens quickly.
As you can see, building a vintage-style airplane often requires vintage-style methods.  The tubes for this Horizontal stabilizer were bent by hand with nothing more than a piece of board with contoured blocks.  We differed from the plans in that the leading edge of this horizontal stabilizer was designed to be straight.  Curving the front edge has no negative effects on performance, and has been done on several other projects in the past.
